We might not get paid for it, but we the fans are the MOST important part of these artists' careers. Without us, without a fan base, they are nothing in the music industry, and you'll often hear many of them say so during interviews, award acceptance speeches, and concerts. So pat yourselves on the back ladies and gents, WE ROCK :)

CAN'T FORGET ABOUT THESE PEOPLE...

I focused mainly on the jobs that are strictly involved with the music business only, however, we can't forget about the people who do jobs for more than just those in the music industry. I'm talking about the accountants, the limo drivers, security guards, photographers, personal assistants, promoters etc. All of these people are important and without them the team wouldn't be complete!

I hope everyone knows that Shakira, Alicia Keys and many other celebrities, including the male celebrities, don't roll out of bed looking like a million bucks! It takes a team, a team that is usually considered as "the glam squad". They have they're personal trainers such as Ottawa born Jeanette Jenkins, make-up artists, hair stylists and clothing stylists to assist them in making them look like the people we all tend to admire. Some celebrities stick to a set glam team that travels with them everywhere, but it’s very likely that they'll work with a number of teams while doing photo shoots, TV appearances, etc. The glam squad is an essential part of the team!

I'm going off on a bit of a tangent here, but considering my blog has to do with music I still feel this is somewhat relevant. As we all know, the musical icon Whitney Houston passed away on February 11, 2012 which was a shock to the world especially to a fan such as me. I wanted to dedicate this blog post to Ms. Houston by showing a video of my favorite Whitney Houston song. Music managers may be hired by the artist or in a case like Justin Bieber, the artists’ manager may have been the one who discovered the talent. The manager’s overall task is to make decisions when it comes to bookings, promotions, recording contracts, business deals etc. The managers are also responsible for hiring other individuals that make up a music career. When an artists’ career starts to grow, the manager’s responsibilities grow as well, and as the artist starts the make more money, the manager makes more as well due to the percentage agreement that is stated in contracts.

Artists like Lady GaGa do not make up those crazy dance routines themselves, they hire choreographers like Toronto's very own Laurieann Gibson to create dance routines for concerts and music videos. Most choreographers start off as dancers, but because dance is such a strenuous activity and injuries occur often, they stop around there 30's. Choreographers create original dances and develop new interpretations of existing dances, and instruct other dancers by demonstrating the exact routine. Dancers need constant training to be successful and to become a choreographer it takes many years of experience. Choreographer's and back up dancers are essential for almost every artist. Dancers are seen at almost all concerts, award shows and music videos.

Though there are many musicians out there such as singer-songwriter Ne-Yo, who write their own songs, there are many artists that do not or they decide to get a bit of help. A songwriter is just that, a person who writes songs. Professional songwriters may be hired to write a song directly for an artist or to work alongside the artist where both the songwriter and the artist work together. It's not uncommon for an artists' album to consist of more than one songwriter. A staff writer is a songwriter who is signed to an agreement with a publisher which means all their songs are published by the company they have the agreement with and cannot be published anywhere else. The talent of a songwriter is just as important as the talent of a musical artist.

The producer is a very important member in the music industry. The job of a producer is to manage the recording (production) of an artist's music. A producer has a number of roles such as gathering ideas, selecting the songs an artist should include on their album and selecting musicians the artist should collaborate with, coaching the artist in the studio, creating budgets, schedules and dealing with negotiations. There are two types of producers, executive producers and music producers. While executive producers oversee the finances of the musician's project, the music producer focuses on the creation of the music. Most artists work with more than one producer for one album allowing different types of creativity to be included in the final project.

Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Adele are just a few examples of the many artists that society idolizes today. They are the talent, the money makers, the face that the world wants to see. The truth however, is that without a large team behind them, these artists would not be able to be as successful as they have become. Like most jobs, being an artist requires great teamwork, and if one person in the team fails to do their job, it can cause problems. There are many individuals who consider music their passion; however they do not have the musical talent to be a star. Luckily for them, they have many other options. Writers, producers, make-up artists, dancers, publicists, graphic designers, photographers are just a few of the many jobs that makes up the team of a famous musician. With this blog I hope to educate you all on the jobs behind the artist, because without a team, your favorite artist may not be so famous :)
